WHAT IS CYBER STALKING?
• Cyber stalking is one of the latest variants of stalking behavior. The stalker utilizes electronic medians such as the internet to pursue, harass, and intimidate another.
WHAT IS STALKING AND WHO IS AT RISK?
• Stalking is defined as a course of conduct directed at a specific person that would cause a reasonable person to feel fear.

• • Cyber stalking usually occurs with women, stalked by men, or children who are stalked by adult predators. •
During a 12-month period an estimated 14 in every 1,000 persons ages 18 and older were victims of stalking.

Cyber stalking victims are typically new online, and inexperienced with the rules of predators.
About half (46%) of stalking victims experienced at least one unwanted contact per week, and 11% of victims said they had been stalked for 5 years or more.

Approximately 1 in 4 stalking victims reported some form of cyber-stalking such as email (83%) or instant messaging (35%). •
The risk of stalking victimization was highest for individuals who were divorced or separated—34 per 1,000 individuals.

Women were at greater risk than men for stalking victimization; however, women and men were equally likely to experience harassment.
(U.S. Department of Justice, 2009) • Nearly 3 in 4 stalking victims knew their offender in some capacity.
