How I LIVE UNITED - James DuBoseMy name is James DuBose and even though I have a demanding schedule, I recently dedicated myself to volunteering in the community. Thanks, in large part, to United Way of the Midlands’ Volunteer Center, I find time to assist organizations, around the Midlands, that are committed to helping others. The Volunteer Center is so easy to use. I logged on to www.uway.org/volunteer, received e-mail updates about upcoming opportunities, and that is probably the main reason that I have had the chance to help people in need. Since my initial discovery of this easy to access tool in December, I have logged over 100 hours working with the Sexual Trauma Service[s] of the Midlands and Harvest Hope Food Bank. I went through 25 hours of training that taught me crisis intervention and support methods to assist survivors of sexual assault. Sexual assault is a prevalent crime in our society, and I am proud to be one of many that serve an agency whose mission is to advocate for survivors and educate the public about sexual violence issues. I believe that it is important to I balance my emotional assistance with hands on help so I also volunteer whenever I can at Harvest Hope Food Bank, mainly sorting donated goods and preparing grocery bags. Volunteering provides me with great life experience and I get to meet other people who value community service as well. Helping people in crisis and those who are hungry is how I LIVE UNITED. *copied from: http://www.uway.org/supporters/ James has been a volunteer with Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands since February 2008.
